Who can sponsor Friend Accounts?

Anyone with a WSU Network ID or Friend ID can sponsor a new Friend Account. For example, a WSU student can create a Friend Account for a parent.

Sponsoring a new Friend Account

To create a new Friend Account, select "Sponsor an Account" from the menu, then supply the individual's email address, name, and optional phone number. If you are authorized to sponsor services maintained by the Friend Accounts system, these will be listed, and you may select one or more services as appropriate.

Sponsors may authorize Friend Accounts for network services at the time the account is created, or later. The services that can be authorized depend on the sponsor's role with WSU (faculty, staff or student). In some instances services are authorized using the Friend Accounts system and in other instances are authorized using other WSU online systems.

What is an authorization for service?

A WSU network service is any online WSU resource requiring login with a WSU Friend ID or Network ID, such as access to the WSU wireless network. An authorization is a permission to use a service. Friend Accounts are sponsored for authorizations as described below.

Services available to all Friend Accounts

Anyone with a Friend Account may make a payment on a WSU account, student loan, or housing & dining account. Additional services are planned.

Sponsoring an authorization via the Friend Accounts system

Services with sponsorship via the Friend Accounts system include:

  • Online resources for classes taken by non-WSU students, or taught by guest instructors
  • Wireless network access for conference attendees and others visiting a WSU campus
  • Computing lab access for non-WSU students

If the individual to be sponsored does not have a Friend Account, select "Sponsor an Account" from the menu, then create a new Friend Account with one or more authorzations. Services you can authorize (appropriate to your role with WSU) are listed, and you select one or more as needed.

If the individual already has a Friend Account, select "Sponsor an Authorization" from the menu and search for the Friend Account. You may then add one or more more authorizations or change existing authorizations as appropriate to your role.

Sponsoring an authorization outside the Friend Accounts system

Not all authorizations for service originate with the Friend Accounts system. For example, WSU students authorize parents or other third parties to view their official WSU records via myWSU Third Party Access.

If the individual being sponsored does not have a Friend Account, first select "Sponsor an Account" from the main menu, create the Friend Account, then use the appropriate WSU online system to sponsor access.

If the individual already has a Friend Account, simply use the authorization feature of the appropriate WSU online system to sponsor the person for access.
